Indrakhee sat on her luxury rocking chair in the veranda of her two storied home in posh Hauz Khas Enclave, staring into the sprawling field on the other side of the road. She sipped on her vodka-lime cordial that was served by her trusted maid Janki. This home of hers was her private world. She was pensive. A thousand thoughts raced through her mind. The past came flooding back. The present needled her into contemplating on the future. The evening was just around the corner as dusk took over from a day gone by. She rested her head back on the headrest and closed her eyes. She had another sip of the vodka. The soothing strains of the evening prayer songs from the Gauri Temple on the other end of the field were filling the air in its calm serenity.

Indrakhee loved this home of hers. It was a sheer stroke of luck that she purchased it at a dirt-cheap cost. A publisher had put up this house on distress sale as he was leaving Delhi. A number of property dealers were eyeing this house. But since this area was a designated heritage site, any type of multi-storeyed construction of flats was not allowed by the Municipal Corporation. Hence she was lucky to get it.

This was just the type of abode she wanted where she could go into her cocoon away from a greedy merciless world. All her life she had fought to find such a place as this. Life has given her all…victories…defeats…losses…gains…et al! In this continuous struggle for existence, she never imagined a home in domesticity. Perhaps it was not for her. After losing Soubhik, she never thought of marriage again. No one even came to propose. After two unsuccessful attempts at marriage, even Ashish was hesitant to jump into holy matrimony.

”My marriages do not last. My fate is such. If I marry you, I might lose you. I don't want to lose you after marrying again,” he would say.

Their relationship stood the test of time. Even without marriage. They could well have got married...had children... had a house and settled in blissful domesticity. Then her ‘The New Age’ would have never come into being. In this continuous striving Indrakhee always wanted the proximity, sharing, and love of Ashish. Home and career could not go side-by-side. Hence, this was the life that she consciously chose and was happy about it…with Ashish. She understood that someone can share sorrows, but those sorrows cannot be shared in a home. Indrakhee was happy the way everything was.

There was a time when she wanted to die, out of frustration, sorrow, anger, and pain. When tears would come flowing down unabated. Tears of a lurking fear that she would never get a home, a roof or a safe haven, which she could call her own. Her existence then was based on helplessness, defeat, and failure.

Sipping on her drink, she remembered Subrata uncle - her father's friend. He used to come quite often to spend the evenings with her father.
